Located in Bluff Harbour, South Port is New Zealand’s southernmost commercial deep water port, providing marine services, cargo and container shipping, and on-site warehousing for Southland’s export and import industries.

The Brief

South Port approached us to create a slick, modern website to act as an active platform for communication with their customers, suppliers, shareholders and the wider community.

Following the success of this project, they engaged us to develop a web-based app for their team to use to manage the logging and reporting of shipping movements.

They also engage us to design and print their annual report and other marketing material.

Our Work

We created a custom-designed and developed website for South Port. Key features of the design included clean lines, large high quality images and multi-tiered menus to ensure large quantities of content could be structured in a logical manner.

The development phase included pulling real-time data in from wind and tide loggers based on the wharves and displaying these on the website. Data from operational databases recording ship arrivals and departures is also displayed on the site. These features mean the website is a key tool used by port staff, shipping lines and customers in their daily activities.

We created the Shipping Movements app to aid the South Port marine team in logging and reporting ships due for arrival and ships in port, with data being pushed out to interested parties via the website and daily email reports. This cloud-based web app replaced an ageing database that was held on-site at South Port. We undertook a thorough scoping process and designed the app to improve user friendliness and reliability, with the added benefit that the team can access and update it from anywhere, not just in the office.

The South Port annual report is the company’s key marketing showpiece, designed to not only inform shareholders of its financial performance but also to promote the port and its activities. Each year’s annual report carries a unique design to convey the theme and messaging in a creative manner, while still aligning with the established brand look and feel.
